Memories

The year 1925; summer time; 13-year-old backwards boy.

Mother, Helen and I changed trains in Chicago. Kate and Virgil planned to meet us in Chicago as a surprise, but were late and arrived at Gary, Indiana at the same time as the train. Kate boarded, looking for us. The train pulled out before she fond us, then "Are you my mother?" she asked Mom.

Virgil rushed to the next station where the train made an emergency stop to let us off. What fun to ride in the back seat of the Model T Ford and catch the summer breeze! No paved roads then!

Memories (in Coldwater)

Cousin Ed Gruner took me fishing at night in his rowboat. We caught lots of fish. I had never fished before. Mable showed me her collection of butterflies and showed me their car in the garage, an air-cooled Franklin! I thought it was beautiful. I fished many times from the banks of the Coldwater River.

Late August we went back to Mulga, Alabama. Mom sold the 80-acre farm near Winfield for $300, which gave us enough to go back to Michigan. It took three days in Bob's 1925 Star Touring Car.

Are not memories great?
