~(Gruner) Luh Family G-6~
(Sixth child, Franz von Gruner & Katharina Bergmann)

G-6 Katharina Gruner
(1826-1871)
Katharina, the sixth child of Franz von Gruner and Katharina Bergman,
was born about 1826 in Reichenberg, Bohemia (now Liberec, Czech
Republic) and died in December 1861 in Branch County, Michigan. Around
1845, she married Karl Luh.
Katharina was the tragic member of the family. She died under mysterious
circumstances three years after coming to America in 1867, believed to have
perished in a snowstorm. Hers could not have been a happy lot, even in that
short period. Karl had purchased a small plot of mostly marshy land, and had
erected a cabin. They were living in near-poverty. They spoke very little
English and did not merge into the open community, as had the other Gruners.
In early January 1868, a Coldwater newspaper wrote about a 'Mysterious
Disappearance' as follows.
‘On the 20th day of December last, Mrs. Luh, a German woman, left her home
in the southeast part of Union township, since which time she has not been seen
or heard from, though two weeks search has been made. It is feared that she
was lost in the woods and froze to death. The disappearance of the snow in the
woods will undoubtedly solve the mystery.’
There is no record that her body was ever found. Her six children, all born in
Bohemia, were Anton, Charles, Wilhelm, Amelia, Anna and Elizabeth. There
are no known living descendants of this family.
