Franz Xavier was the eldest son of Franz von Gruner and his wife Katharina
Bergmann, born about 1810 in Reichenberg, Bohemia, (now Liberec in the Czech
Republic). He married Karoline Konig in 1834. They had five children: Karl
Ferdinand, Karoline, Anna, Johanna and Frances. The first three were born in
Reichenberg, the last two in this country.
Franz Xavier is believed to have come to America in 1848 with two of his
brothers. They settled temporarily in Rochester, New York, then in 1854 he
and his brother Josef moved to Auburn New York and set themselves up in
business as “cloth-makers” (weavers). It is probable that Franz X. did not bring
his family from Europe until shortly before the removal to Auburn. Little is
known of Franz or his wife in Auburn, outside of his appearance in the 1855
census there and his subsequent death around 1860. Much more is known
of his son Karl Ferdinand.

Karoline married a man surnamed Elger. She is listed in the will of Karl Gruner
as living in 1902 in Aburn, NY. Her occupation was "Geschaftsleitersgatten"
(business manager's wife) with no indication that she had any children.

Anna is mentioned in the 1906 will of Karl Gruner as having died in Aburn, NY.

Fourth child of Franz X. Gruner and Karoline Konig

Married: Andrew Krause
Children: Edward Krause
Johanna was left a legacy in 1906 in the will of Franz X. Gruner. Her address
was listed as No. 6 Genessee Street, Auburn, NY, where she had a glove business.
She is listed among living relatives in the 1913 family reunion records.

Fifth child of Franz X. Gruner and Karoline Konig.
Frances is listed in the 1855 Auburn (Cayuga) population census as a daughter
in the household of Franz X. Gruner. There are no other family records.
