Winifred Gruner – Richard Tappenden
169 West Miller Lake Road
Coldwater, MI
G-7.4-14 Winifred Pauline Gruner (1927- ) married Richard W. Tappenden in 1945
and they purchased this farm soon after. It is located about a mile down the road
from the Anton and Wenzel farms and only one half mile south of the Ward C.
Gruner Farm. Like the Clare Gruner place it came into the family much later than
the real ancestral homes but is included here because it is still family owned and
located near the others.
Winifred is the fourth child of Karl W. Gruner and Pauline Buck and
granddaughter of Ward C. Gruner. Winifred and Dick have 2 sons: David and
Stephen. In addition to the farm he helped manage a bowling establishment in
Coldwater for many years and she worked at the Federal Mogul Warehouse
until it relocated to Alabama in the late 1970s. Dick and his sons also operate
a saw mill located on the farm. The old high hip roof barn is now gone and
replaced with a modern pole barn. The house has been modernized and looks
very good.
Winifred remains interested in Gruner Family Reunion Association
and serves on the planning committee. She usually takes care of getting
the awards for the youngest and eldest persons attending the Reunions.
We no longer have an annual reunion, so her duties have lessened since
we hold one only every five years. Like the rest of us, we are getting older
and seeking some interested younger generations to carry on.
