G-44-3 The Edward Adolph Home

Edward C. Adolph – Martha Ahlgrim
1033 Union City Road
Union City, MI

Home built about 1856 by a man named Talbot almost entirely of Whitewood. Sawmills were in place by then and settlers were eager to get out of their log cabins. Whitewood was plentiful, easy to work and resistant to warping.

G-4.4-3 Edward Clarence Adolph (1880-1936), son of Willard, married Martha Ahlgrim about the time he bought this farm from Talbot. He was known as a progressive farmer and became the first person in Union City to own an automobile when he bought a REO in 1917. In 1922 they retired and moved in to Union City leaving the farm to Edward Adolph II. (1908-1981).

Current owner is grandson Edward Adolph III. Ed, as he is called, is proud of the house and its history. He started restoring it in 1999. The large porch and the "gingerbread" trim had gradually succumbed to weather and age. Ed found an Amish man with the skill to copy and reproduce the trim. Ed has bought additional land as it became available. He is now retired and is renting out the farmland while he pursues his hobby of collecting old tractors. His wife, Sue Troyer, works in the bank in Union City and is Union Township Clerk.
